Province Lands Trail Distances in miles: Loop trail 5.45 Herring Cove Beach spur 1.10 Race Point Beach spur .50 Bennett Pond spur .25 Access points: Beech Forest parking area Province Lands Visitor Center Race Point Beach parking area* Herring Cove Beach parking area* * beach fees may apply
Province Lands Bicycle Trail in Provincetown is a hilly trail, featuring what seems like more hairpin curves than straight stretches. The loop brings bikers by beautiful dunes, through wetlands, and around cranberry bogs, allowing visitors to experience the diverse Cape Cod ecosystem. The spurs, which can add considerable distance to the nearly 5.5 mile loop, provide nice opportunities for visits to the beaches.
It should be noted that caution should be exercised when biking this trail because of its steep hills, sharp curves and low tunnels. There is also the chance of windblown sand or submersion on portions of the trail, so speed should be low to moderate on the Provincelands Trail; it is also advised for children to be supervised by an adult on this trail. The Provincelands Visitor Center provides a 360-degree view of the Atlantic Ocean and its incredible dunes from its observation deck, along with views of the Race Point Ranger Station and beach, the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station, and the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, in addition to the gorgeous nearby dunes and beaches.
The Provincelands Visitors Center provides information on local flora and fauna, as well as the history of the Pilgrims arrival in Provincetown. The observation deck, exhibits, indoor theater, and bookstore at the Provincelands Visitors Center provide an exceptional opportunity for the bikers to connect to Cape Cod as a destination.
To take full advantage of the area, there are ranger-led programs, canoe programs, surf programs, and special events (such as family campfires). Some programs require advance registration, so calling ahead is recommended. Also note that equipment is included in some of the programs.
The Province Lands Visitor Center is located about a mile from Provincetown on Race Point Road. Open daily from May 1 through October 31st from 9 AM to 5 PM, you can reach the Visitors Center by callng 508-487-1256. (less)

Head of the Meadow Trail Access points: High Head Road, Truro Head of the Meadow Beach parking area, Truro (beach fees may apply)
Head of the Meadow Trail provides a flat, curvy excursion through a woodsy area that also features dunes. Wildlife and various birds can often be seen along this trail. High Head Road is the preferred access for this trail as the parking is free (the access for the other end of the trail is Meadow Beach parking, which often has beach fees). Also, using the High Head Road access allows you to explore the town of North Truro on your bike or on foot, or to take a break at the beach. It's said that there is an historical spot on this trail, but you may have to search a bit if you're interested in seeing it. "First Spring", which is supposedly a spring along this trail where the Pilgrims encounted deer and found the spring, is depicted in a painting at the Pilgrim Monument Museum in Provincetown.
Head of the Meadow Trail runs for 2 miles between High Head Road and Head of the Meadow Beach parking lot in Truro, so the roundtrip trail is 4 miles. (less)

Nauset Trail Access: Salt Pond Visitor Center
|
|
Nauset Trail Access points: Salt Pond Visitor Center parking area, Eastham Distance: 1.6 miles Doane Rock picnic area, Eastham
Nauset Marsh Trail runs 1.6 miles one-way from the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham to Coast Guard Beach. Nauset Trail allows you to experience the woodsy area as well as wetlands, all the way to the Atlantic Ocean at Coast Guard Beach. Travelling over the Nauset Marsh on the boardwalk is a highlight of this trail, along with the possibility to see surfers and seals at Coast Guard Beach.
If you are interested in history, it's reported that the Doane Memorial, which is a monument to where Deacon John Doane built his home in 1644, is located along the marsh. To access it, you'll need to stop at the second stop sign and head towards the marsh.
The Salt Pond Visitor Center is one of the biggest attractions for the Nauset Marsh Trail, as it is the main venue for visitors on the Cape Cod National Seashore. Featuring an indoor theatre, a comprehensive bookstore, and an interesting museum, the Salt Pond Visitor Center is one of the largest visitor centers on Cape Cod. The museum features Cape Cod-themed items, along with art by well-known artists. The museum also exhibits the flora and fauna particular to the Cape, including native birds, salt marsh animals and vegetation, and beach components and other natural impacts on Cape Cod.
If you decide not to start Nauset Trail at the Salt Pond Visitor Center, a visit would still be worthwhile. Also accessible from the Salt Pond Visitor Center is The Buttonbush Trail, which is a short (approximately a quarter of a mile) multi-sensory trail that includes Braille and large print.
Salt Pond Visitor Center is located at the corner of Nauset Road and Route 6 in Eastham. It is open daily 9 AM to 4:30 PM (increased hours during the summer). Parking and restrooms are available. To reach the Visitor Center, call 508-255-3421. (less)

The next big change for the Cape was when the railroad extended to Provincetown in 1873; the railroad was in use until the 1960s.

Trail of Tears Trailhead Access from Rt. 149 UNPAVED Distance: 20+ miles
Located in the West Barnstable Conservation Area, the Trail of Tears is a circuit of trails that is one of the most popular unpaved bike trails on Cape Cod. These steep, twisting singletrack trails make for a good aerobic workout without being too technical. The short steep hills can be exhilarating! The vegetation seen along the Trail of Tears is not the common Cape vegetation; you'll see Red Oak and blueberry bushes, although you should also be aware of poison ivy. Maintained by the Barnstable Land Management Committee and the Barnstable Conservation Commission, the Trail of Tears is approximately 20 miles of connected trails.
There are three parking areas that allow easy access to the Trail of Tears. The biggest parking lot is located off the Service Road from Rt. 149. Another lot is located on Popple Bottom off Rt. 149, and the last one is on Farmersville Rd. off Race Lane.
It should be noted that hunting is allowed in-season and there is a shooting range nearby the Trail of Tears. (less)

(less)

Nickerson State Park Distance: 8 miles
Nickerson State Park is comprised of 1900 acres of land, offering 8 miles of bike trails that connect to the 22 mile Cape Cod Rail Trail. Nickerson State Park also has hiking trails and bridle paths (both paved and unpaved).
The beautiful nature that the Nickerson State Park provides is worth visiting. From the numerous ponds and lakes to the various trees and plant life, Nickerson State Park offers a variety of Cape landscape, in addition to the birds, deer and fox that are common in the park. Although the scenery doesn't include dunes, beaches, or marshes that are typical of the Cape, the woodsy serenity is a welcome alternate.
Parking is available near the entrance, but there are several other parking lots throughout the park in the case of a desire to start on a different trail.
Several picnic areas, restrooms, and campsites are available around Nickerson State Park. Swimming and canoeing at Flax Pond is permitted as is catch-and-release fishing at Higgins Pond; there are also many park programs, a Nature Center, and an amphitheatre available.
