Dunluce Castle
The home to manies a battle and eventually home to colourful local chieftain, Sorley Boy MacDonnell, the dramatic and picturesque setting had its drawbacks with some nine servants being lost in 1639 when the kitchen fell into the sea. Their screams can be heard to this day on certain nights it is said.
Look out for plenty of wording on site about Sorley Boy and the McDonnells who were to become the Earls of Antrim.
Fans of C.S. Lewis may be interested to know that this derelict castle proved to be a key inspiration on the young Lewis's imagination while on holiday along the coast at the start of the 20th century when his beloved mother was still alive. Among the ruins of Dunluce Castle and the beaches along the Causeway Coast, one can observe the origins of Cair Paravel. In ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' we read: ‘The castle of Cair Paravel on its little hill towered up above them; before them were the sands, with rocks and little pools of salt water, and sea weed, and the smell of the sea, and long lines of bluish green waves breaking forever and ever on the beach. And oh, the cry of the sea-gulls! Have you heard it? Can you remember?'
These holidays instilled in Lewis a sense of the geography of Ulster and the wider landscape which he was to incorporate into the childhood stories and drawings that so absorbed his imagination. His earliest writings were coloured by his environment. The Irish landscape provided CS Lewis with an unchanging link with his past and an endless source of inspiration.
Open daily October to March, 10-5. Open April to September, 10-6, Sunday 2-6. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Limited disabled access throughout. Giftshop on site. (less)

Rathlin island ferry via Ballycastle
History, birdlife and wildlife are in abundance on this island some six miles off the coast. Amidst the rugged landscape of this isolated island, you can let your mind wander and discover a tranquility and beauty that is so unexpected.
The ferry to Rathlin Island travels just six miles across the "Sea of Moyle". This island is six miles long, one mile wide, "L" shaped and home to a small population of around seventy people.
In the harbour is the Boathouse, where visitors can discover some of the exciting history, learn about present day island life and see some artefacts from shipwrecks around the island. A short walk around to Mill Bay there is a colony of seals, who are fun to just sit and watch!
At the other side of the harbour are two churches where visitors can sit quietly or just admire the architecture. At the west of the island is the renowned RSPB Seabird Centre, where puffins, guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes can be viewed during the summer months. It is also home to some magnificent views, on clear days Donegal, the North Antrim coastline, the island of Islay and the Mull of Kintyre can be seen. Throughout the year special occasions are celebrated with ceilidhs. Music, song and dance remain at the heart of the community life.
***Please note that the RSPB Seabird Centre will not be open to the public during the 2014 season. It will re-open for business in April 2015. This is to facilitate an upgrade to visitor facilities at the centre.
There are many tales of myth and mystery surrounding Rathlin, the most famous tells of Robert the Bruce. In 1306, the Scottish King was driven from Scotland by Edward I of England and took refuge on Rathlin. While he was on Rathlin, it is said that he watched a spider persevering again and again to bridge a gap with its web. Eventually it succeeded. Robert the Bruce took heart from the spider's efforts, raised fresh forces and returned to Scotland to fight for his kingdom. He too, eventually succeeded and in 1314, regained the crown of Scotland. The Lyric Theatre
The Lyric Theatre in Belfast makes a unique and vital contribution to the community as the only full-time producing theatre in Northern Ireland.
Employing local actors, including Liam Neeson, Ciarán Hinds and Adrian Dunbar at early stages of their careers, its mission is to produce high-quality professional theatre that is alive to the complex cultural experience and diverse traditions of the community, and to use the power of live theatre to empower, inspire, engage and educate. From first rehearsal to final curtain, the shows we create are truly indigenous products of Northern Ireland. Putting local issues and local characters centre stage is what the Lyric does best. Our shows are relevant to local audiences and revealing to visitors to the city. And a very important part of the new Lyric Theatre's strategy is to tour as widely as possible, to give audiences outside Northern Ireland an insight into our culture and to the work of the Lyric. Officially opened in May 2011 by Brian Friel, the Lyric's new home on the banks of Belfast's River Lagan, on the site of the previous theatre, is a landmark £18.1m building that signals the continued regeneration of the city and a catalyst for real progress in arts infrastructure for artists and audiences alike. Historical Tour Of Derry City The city of Derry, Doire or Londonderry is Irelands only remaining walled city and offers 1500 years of social, cultural and religious history. Derry was initially a monastic settlement, which became a plantation town and in later years it was a center port for emigration to America, Australia, England and Scotland. Derry is still making history as the opposing communities continue to work together towards a lasting settlement of disagreements.
From a bank of trained guides one expert guide Mr John McNulty will recount stories of Irish emigration to America and local Irish history. A tour with John is not to be missed. His wealth of knowledge on these subjects will be of benefit to those seeking information on the people and city of origin of local emigrants, possibly your forebears.

Tower Museum
Derry city is one of the oldest inhabited settlements in Ireland and has a fascinating history. The Story of Derry exhibition at the Tower Museum uses a wide range of techniques and artefacts to narrate the story from Monastic times, the Plantation of Londonderry, the Siege of Derry, through to the growth of Derry during the 18th and 19th centuries. The city played its own part in the dramatic events of the early 20th century and during Partition. Life during the 20th century is also outlined, in particular the build up to the Civil Rights Movement and the impact of the Troubles on the people living here. The exhibition ends with a glimpse of where the city is today.

Fermanagh County Museum
Fermanagh County Museum is a registered museum, under the MLA Accreditation Scheme for museums in the United Kingdom. The museum is located within and around the historic Enniskillen Castle and was established in 1976 by Fermanagh District Council.
The museum collections reflect Fermanagh's history, culture and environment. One of the aims of the museum is to enlarge these collections so as to cover as many aspects of Fermanagh's culture as possible. One of our primary concerns is the long-term preservation of these collections for future generations. Throughout the year, the Museum provides a changing exhibition programme, covering a wide diversity of subjects, of local as well as general interest. It organises many different kinds of events, including lectures, Living History events, craft demonstrations, storytelling, poetry and prose readings, various commemorative events and many types of family entertainment programmes during the summer, at Christmas and at Hallowe'en. Its education programmes meet the needs of those in formal education as well as providing resources for life-long learning.
Fermanagh County Museum is open all year round and attracts approximately 20,000 visitors annually. Its award winning exhibitions cover the prehistory and natural history of Fermanagh, the county's traditional rural life, local crafts and the celebrated pottery at Belleek. Additional displays within Enniskillen Castle trace the long and complex history of this building from its original use as a stronghold of the local Gaelic Maguire chieftains to its later use as a Plantation castle and military barracks. Another attraction within Enniskillen Castle is The Inniskillings Museum with its collection of uniforms, weapons, medals and memorabilia dating back to the 17th Century. (less)

The first thing that needs to be said about Fermanagh is that it is a renowned Mecca for fishermen. We deliberately did not choose one lough or perch for you to fish, instead leaving you in the more capable hands of the tourist board who have first class material on all of the fishing locations you'll need to know. Disclaimer duly served!
Enniskillen is lively town with good facilities from theatre to pubs and serves as the perfect starting point for a Fermanagh break, lying on the banks of Lough Erne. Lough Erne is the top part of a vast network providing boating holidays. The Erne-Shannon link effectively creates a 500 mile waterway of wildlife, scenery and the ability to stop and ease up where you like. For information on Lough Erne cruises, contact the Tourist Information Office, Monday to Friday 9-5.30 (until 7 in high season) Open weekends Easter to September on Saturday 10-6, Sunday 11-5. Monaghan County Museum
Monaghan County Museum has been serving the people of Monaghan for over 35 years. During which, it has diversified to match the needs of a changing community. This award-winning museum has a professional commitment to excellence in caring for and displaying it's collection, as well as making that collection as accessible as possible both intellectually and physically. The museum has a number of outreach exhibitions throughout the county, the museum displays have been recently updated with new accessible exhibits and the museum website and the border museum portal website both have up to date information on collections and events.
Monaghan County Museum opened its doors to the public in 1974 becoming the first full time staffed, local authority funded museum in the Republic of Ireland. The Museum has been widely acclaimed for its commitment in displaying Monaghan's rich culture and heritage. The Museum was originally housed in the Courthouse in the centre of town; however following a fire which gutted the building in 1981 the collection was rescued and temporarily moved to the Christian Brothers Secondary School. It was stored there temporarily and a limited display was continued until the move to Hill Street in August 1986. The Gallery held temporary displays until the fully refurbished museum was opened in June 1990 by Dr Patrick Hillery then President of Ireland. The building was originally two large town houses; however it underwent extensive reconstruction and now offers a unique experience to our visitors as they explore the history of the county in our permanent exhibition galleries. Patrick Kavanagh Centre
The great Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh asked to be commemorated with water, canal bank water preferably and so you'll find his statue sitting stoically on a bench along the Grand Canal in Portobello, Dublin 8. A thousand boozed up by standers have saluted him and no doubt he'd appreciate that.
Less certain is what he'd make of the Patrick Kavanagh Centre in the village he grew up in Monaghan, the place that infamously burgled his bank of youth. Kavanagh was a curmudgeon and a difficult man to meet by all accounts, a classic case of don't meet your idols. Kavanagh was no fan of the Catholic church, yet he is buried in a Catholic graveyard and the museum for him is an old church. However, Kavanagh the poet means a lot to fans of poetry and the museum is well maintained and is worth a visit. (less)

Beaghmore Stone Circles
Thousands of years old, but only discovered in the 1940s, the site at Beaghmore consists of 7 stone circles. All of the rings are associated with cairns and a stone row runs towards these cairns. It is possible that Neolithic occupation and cultivation preceded the erection of burial cairns and ceremonial circles and alignments: some irregular lines and heaps of boulders resembling field-fences or field-clearance may predate the ritual structures. The glens of Antrim
NOTE: THE LOCATION ON THE MAP IS GENERIC.
Famed in poetry, song, myth and magic, there are nine Glens of Antrim, each endowed with an evocative name and each weaving its own special magic.
Lush, green secret places with the sound of water alternately softly swirling, then falling in dramatic torrents, the nine Glens delight the senses. Entwined with their rich beauties are equally diverse and magical stories, combining the colourful history, myth and the traditions of the communities within the glens.
Glenarm - The glen of the army, with Glenarm village, eleven miles north of Larne, on the famous Causeway Coastal Route.
Glencloy - The glen of the hedges, two miles north of Glenarm, with the village of Carnlough at its foot.
Glenariff - The arable or fertile glen, the best-known of the nine as the 'Queen of the Glens', sweeps majestically towards the village of Waterfoot.
Glenballyemon - Edwardstown glen, at the foot of which is Cushendall - more of less at the centre of the nine glens.
Glenaan - The glen of the colt's foot or rush lights, a rugged glen - having the site of the legendary Ossian's grave, with the Cushendall-Ballymoney mountain road.
Glencorp - The glen of the slaughtered, close by Glenaan and roughly parallel to the main road from Cushendall to Cushendun.
Glendun - The glen of the brown river, adjacent to Cushendun village; spanned by a viaduct on the main Cushendall-Ballycastle road.
Glenshesk - The sedgy glen, east of the town of Ballycastle, and sweeping towards the ruins of historical Bonamargy friary.
Glentaisie - Named after 'Taisie', princess of Rathlin Island, roughly west of Ballycastle and, like Glenshesk, close to the town. (less)
