Seoirse O'Dochartaigh
Carndonagh-based multitalented artist who can paint, produce, perform and even help you solve your genealogy. Not so hidden, but yet another Inishowen gem. As journalist Roisin McLaughlin put it "It is no exaggeration to say Seoirse Ć Dochartaigh is the very embodiment of Inishowen's deep cultural heritage. The artist, musician, genealogist and writer may have been born in Belfast, but his heart is firmly rooted here in his peninsula.
He lives in Mossybawn out by Kinnagoe Bay, but your best bet of locating him is to drop him an email or meet him in Carndonagh library where he can be seen a few times a week. When the writer was doing a six-part documentary on Inishowen called Rambling House, there was only one man to ask to be the director of it, and what a spirited performance he gave every week, going away beyond the call of duty every time:

Four Masters Obelisk
The impressive Mountcharles sandstone monument in the centre of the town was erected in 1935 from the funding by local solicitor P.M. Gallagher. It honours the four men who helped write the celebrated Annals of the Four Masters, Brother Michael O'Cleary and laymen Peregrine O'Clery, Peregrine O'Duignan and Fearfeasa O'Maolconry.
It serves as a full account of Gaelic Ireland from its origins until the end of established Gaelic order when the last of chieftains fled in 1607 from Rathmullan, Co. Donegal in what is known as the Flight of the Earls. To read the Annals would take you several months and set you back about e900 - not quite a breezy holiday read if you're thinking about it! With every second building named after them, you may be wondering where exactly are the Annals of the Four Masters today? They're now kept by the Franciscans in Switzerland, but details can be obtained from the National Library on Kildare Street in Dublin as well as from the Four Masters bookshop.
'Four meek men around the cresset, With the scrolls of other days; Four unwearied scribes who treasure Every word and every line. Not for fame or not for fortune, Do these eager penmen dream. Oh ! that we who now inherit All their trust, with half their toil, Were but fit to trace their footsteps Through the Annals of the Isle; Oh ! that the bright Angel, Duty, Guardian of our task might be, Teach us as she taught our Masters, In that Abbey by the sea, Faithful, grateful, just to be!'
T.D. McGee
These days the Diamond area is used to celebrate the homecoming of local heroes such as the victorious Donegal Senior Gaelic football team. From the sublime to the ridiculous, it has recently played host to Irish Eurovision phenomenons, Jedward. Farmers' markets and fayres occur here on a regular basis. The chroniclers of medieval Ireland my not approve of everything they'd see before them today, but in the town of the Four Masters, they are not forgotten and we'd like to think they'd be proud to be in the heart of the action of this thriving historic town.
Looking for more heritage information on the town? The two best books to have (and are gratefully acknowledged as key sources for this guide!) are: Joe McGarrigle's 'Donegal, past and present' and Malachy Sweeney's 'The Sands of Time; a history of Donegal Town and its environs', the latter of which you should be able to get in The Four Masters bookshop. Grianan of Aileach
Grianan of Aileach, the stonehouse of the sun. According to legend, it was built by Daghda, an ancient King of the Tuatha de Danann. A hillfort that once was at the historical centre where 18 high kings ruled over Ireland. During that time, the acts of its kings, warriors, tribes saints and sages dominate many of the pages of Ireland's history but with scarcely any acknowledgement of the particular place from whence they sprang.,/p>
Many gifted writers have waxed lyrical regarding the glories of Royal Meath, but as Harry Percival Swan puts it "none have thought fit to mention Royal Inishowen which has an equal if not better right to regal appellation." You tell them Percy!

The Old Abbey
With great views of Donegal bay, this was the former site of the old abbey of the Franciscan monks, one of which was Brother Michael O'Cleary, the head of the Four Masters who wrote the main chronicle of the middle ages, The Annals of the Four Masters.
The annals are mainly a compilation of earlier annals, although there is some original work. They were compiled between 1632 and 1636 in the Franciscan monastery in Donegal Town and along the banks of the river Drowes. The entries for the 12th century and before are sourced from medieval monastic annals. The later entries come from the records of the Irish aristocracy (such as the Annals of Ulster), and the seventeenth century entries are based on personal recollection and observation.
The chief compiler of the annals was Micheal O' Cleirigh, and he was assisted by, among others, Peregrine O'Clery, Fergus O'Mulconry and Peregrine O'Duignan. Even though only one of the authors was an actual Franciscan, Micheal O' Cleirigh, they became known as 'The Four Friars' or in the original Irish, 'Na Ceithre Maistir'. The Anglicised version of this was 'The Four Masters', a name which then became attached to the annals themselves. The patron of the project was Fearghal O' Gadhra, a lord in County Sligo.

Doe Castle
Doe Castle is located near Creeslough. It was the seat of the Mac Sweeney family who built the Castle in the 16th Century. The central tower of the Castle is surrounded by a powerful bawn-wall over looking the sea on three sides. As one of Donegal's strongest fortifications, Doe Castle played a pivotal role in Irish history. Sir Cahir O'Doherty set up his headquarters here before his attack on Derry in 1608; the Castle was recovered by the Mac Sweeney in 1641 and it was at Doe Castle that Owen Roe O'Neill landed on his return from Europe to lead the 1642 Rising.

Donegal Castle
For most of the last two hundred years, the majority of Donegal Castle lay sadly in ruins, but was almost fully restored in the late 1990s due to an unwavering local campaign by the likes of legendary Mary B. 'Dee' Crossan and Paddy Meehan (amongst others).
Built in 1474, the castle consists of a 15th century rectangular keep with a later Jacobean style wing. The complex is sited on a bend in the River Eske, near the mouth of Donegal Bay, and is surrounded by a 17th century boundary wall. There is a small gatehouse at its entrance mirroring the design of the keep. Most of the stonework was constructed from locally sourced limestone with some sandstone. The castle was the stronghold of the O'Donnell clan, Lords of T?r Conaill and one of the most powerful Gaelic families in Ireland from the 5th to the 16th centuries.
Open Mid March-End October: Daily, 10:00 - 18:00. 1st November - Mid March, Mon, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun 9.30 - 16.30. Last Admission: 45 minutes before closing. Average Length of Visit: 45 minutes. - 1 hour. Disabled access on ground floor only. Toilets.

The Flough
Sam Laird's house, known as The Flough referring to the marshy soil around it, was in its day was a notorious smuggling house along the border on which it sits. These days, the only mischief taking place comes from The Flough members, a performing group that meet up sporadically in the Summer to recreate an American Wake, being what the departure of a son for America was known as in the belief that it was too far and too expensive to expect to ever see him again. The occasion was joyous though as a night listening to the songs and joke of the group will prove.

Donegal International Rally
Donegal people are pure petrolheads and so the rally has become a bit of an institution. Since the event was launched in 1972, it has grown to become Donegal's largest sporting event. Estimated to bring up to e25 million to the local ecomomy each year. The event hosts up to 50,000 plus spectators and is a great combination of high octane and spectacular scenery - its headquarters is the Mount Errigal hotel in Letterkenny, but it moves all around the county.

Glenties

Glenties has two great festivals every year - the annual MacGill Summer School attracts the country's media as it seems to be timed when nothing else is happening in national affairs! The second is a more old fashioned affair being the Harvest festival in September.
Glenties, inspiration for Brian Friel's fictious Ballybeg is also home to ex Donegal football manager, Jim McGuinness. It punches above its weight and has an incredible sense of community spirit evidenced in their strong drama circle and their success in tidy towns competitions. It's a place with thought and long lost charm. Ensure you try and see it on one of your visits to the county.

A professional artist, who has represented Ireland at the Florence Biennale in 2005, Stephen Bennett is renowned for his paintings of the people and landscape of Donegal. Stephen returned to settle in Ardara in 1992 after a very successful career as a Visualiser/Illustrator for leading London advertising agencies and is now an established exhibitor in galleries throughout Ireland. The Studio Gallery houses a large collection of Stephen's original paintings as well as a wide selection of limited edition prints and, should you have a particular scene of your own in mind, he also accepts commissions including portraits.
Stephen enjoys meeting visitors to the gallery and is happy to talk about his work, so feel free to drop in on your trip around the Wild Atlantic Way. The parking is easy and a warm Donegal welcome awaits!

At the Donegal Visitor Resource Centre, you can immerse yourself in the lives of our rural ancestors from Falcarragh and its surrounding region.
Falcarragh, one of the last remaining Gaeltacht regions in Donegal is a market town, and is set in the very heart of the Parish of Cloughaneely, which is located in the Northwest of Donegal on the N56 route. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery, magnificent Mountains, lake filled valleys and fringed by the Atlantic sea. Language, culture, heritage, history and memories of our ancestor's lifestyles are depicted amidst artefacts and exhibits along with the tools used while working the land.
This authentic two-storey building was originally constructed in 1890 as the Falcarragh Police Barracks and used as such until 1920 when it became the Falcarragh Garda Station. Permanent exhibits of the history and culture of the Barracks are displayed within the visitor centre, which adds to the uniqueness and authenticity of the centre.

Daniel O'Donnell Visitor Centre
It was only a matter of time really - Donegal's favourite son, Daniel O'Donnell now has a permanent celebration of his incredible life. As a mark of recognition to the remarkable success of Daniel, the proud townsfolk have created this museum of his life thus far and hope you will join them in saluting their golden boy.
Once you are inside the custom designed building the story of Daniel's life will be told through displays, videos and exclusive memorabilia to show the progress of his international career over the last 25 years. The displays include some of his favourite stage outfits and as a special treat visitors can see close up his wedding suit and Majella's beautiful wedding dress.
The visitor can follow Daniel's life from his roots in a small coastal village to the world stage and see some of the many awards he received including his gold and platinum albums. Video screens will show extracts from many of the top TV shows he has appeared on along with all his own song promo films and extracts from many sell out concerts since his career began.
As you all probably know Daniel hails from the Rosses, in the small townland of Kincasslagh but what you probably didn't know is that Dungloe is the capital of the Rosses so they feel it only right that the location of "THE DANIEL O'DONNELL VISITOR CENTRE" is right in the middle of Dungloe's Main Street.
If you are a fan of Daniel O'Donnell then you will not want to miss a trip to Dungloe to experience this dedicated permanent tribute to the boy from Donegal. Even if you are not, salute wee Daniel - guys like this don't come along too often.

Flight of the Earls heritage centre
Update: sadly, this place has closed.
The Flight of the Earls Heritage Centre overlooks the very shore from where the Earls left Ireland for good, in Rathmullan County Donegal. In 1607 the Earls of Ulster departed Ireland, their intention was to gain support in Europe for a liberation of Ireland from English rule but they never returned. There departure marked the end of an era and the beginning of a chain of events which reverberated down the centuries and left a grim legacy of mistrust, resentment and conflict.
The Exhibition is housed in a fort built in 1880 as a defence against possible invasion by the French. It is a lively, informative and interesting display of the life and times of the Earls and the aftermath of their Flight. Displays include models, maps, artwork, literature, fabric hangings and lifelike wax models of the Earls and their families.

Limited disabled access - some tricky gravel and terrain. Open daily from 10-6 all year round.

Newmills Corn & Flax Mills
The oldest surviving building here is said to be 400 years old. Indeed, the whole complex is an interesting reminder of a stage in the industrial development of this country which has now given way to a more sophisticated, but usually far less fascinating technology. The visitor to Newmills can experience the pleasure of seeing one of the largest waterwheels in Ireland in action as it drives the machinery of the corn mill.

Dan's Cottage
A 'Big Night' as it was known locally is held every Thursday in July and first two of August from 8pm to 10pm. Music, song, recitations and poetry in an authentic thatched cottage. Tea and homemade scones served. Entry is discretionary with proceeds to charities. Brendan Kearney has intermittent nights of traditional music and craic here in the heart of the onetime "Poitin Republic".
In the not so distant past, before television came into peoples homes, the regular form of entertainment was storytelling and music. This would be held in different houses around the area known as the rambling house, where people would gather near and far to meet celebrities of their day, their neighbours. Brendan takes a back seat, but is a most gracious host.

John Joe's
Home to some of the best traditional music you'll hear on a trip to Donegal. John Joe's Bar and Lounge (Teach John Joe) in Kilcar County Donegal has been a family run business since 1929 when his own father, John, bought it.
After John Joe started running the Pub in the mid-1960s, he took a brave step by having live music music at the weekends. The music tastes catered for in John Joes at present cover a wide spectrum, from traditional to folk, from country to rock, and in music terms, it is not only live music, but lively discos as well. Leo's Tavern
One of the most famous pubs in Donegal by virtue of the prodigious siblings who made up most of Clannad as well as the fragrant Enya. It's well signposted and is 3km south of Gweedore on the road to Crolly. The parents, Leo and Baba Brennan still serve behind the bar, but the nearest you'll see of the kids is the mementos on the wall. Legions of music lovers make the pilgrimage to this tavern in the hope that some of the Brennan kids are in town and might just be playing some of their latest work. It has been known...

Teach Hudi Beag

The genesis of 'ceol agus ol'. No visit to Ireland is complete without a proper traditional Irish music session. Only an idiot would call it diddley-i music for a true session is where women swoon, spirits soar and Gods are created in a single night.
As such, a visit to this pub is a trip to "Mecca' for fans of the real thing. This legendary Gweedore pub is regarded by many as where the actual Irish session as we know it, started. Many great trad musicians have played in its venerated chamber. (less)
