We are interested in having a device that can used in the car, but also taken out of the car for short walks (15 min) off the road or on trails scenic overlooks or POI. We were looking at the Garmin Nuvi 350, but it has software on it that snaps you to the road from what we read, isn't well suited for walking off road. Do you have a suggestion for a better device that is suitable for both driving and leaving the car on short walks?

The nuvi does snap to roads, but it is not as bad as it may sound.  It only snaps to a road when there is one nearby (probably within 50-100ft).  If there are no roads on the map within this distance, then the "vehicle" (as garmin calls it) appears to be not on a road.  This is what would happen if you take the device off-road while walking down trails.

GeoTours Mobile running on a smartphone or PDA does not do navigation, so this would not be a problem.  It does show a list of tour locations with an arrow pointing in the direction from your current location as well as the distance from your current location, so the user could follow the arrow to find the next tour location and never have the possibility of the device "snapping" to the nearest road.

Thanks, Scott

Reid, maybe this can help you (i don't know if it works on Nuvi350)
When you want to leave the car on short walks change the setting "Route Preference" under "Settings" -> "Navigation" to OffRoad.
Using that, location will no be snaped to any road.
Hope it helps
