Jowler Creek is a sustainable, family-run vinyeard and winery nestled amongst nature in the hills just north of Kansas City, Missouri. We specialize in making high-quality wines that are fun to drink and easy to pair with local Kansas City foods.
We carefully tend to each and every one of our Norton, Vignoles, Traminette and Cabernet Franc vines by utilizing sustainable pracitices. And when it's time to harvest we keep the emphasis on quality - and not - and quantity - so you truly get more high-quality fruit in every glass.
In the winery Jowler Creek mates sustainable winemaking practices with the craft of careful blending to create quality wines. The result? Wines that are approachable, fruit-forward, and – above all – fun to drink.
Don't live in Kansas City but want to get Jowler Creek wine? Owners Jason and Colleen Gerke would like to be the first to invite you to join their "Creek Club". By joining the wine club, you'll be treated to Jowler Creek wines delivered to your door every three months…often before anyone else has a chance to try them. Located in northeastern Lafayette County, this region of Missouri marks the southern boundary of the glacier fields present during the Ice Age. As the ice retreated, blowing winds deposited deep, fertile, silt loam soil that is excellent for growing grapes. This loess soil allows for exceptional growth of our varieties of grapes: Cynthiana, Chambourcin, Chardonel, Vignoles and Cabernet France.
Names after the bend in the Missouri River where legend suggests a boat called Baltimore sank, Baltimore Bend Vineyard offers a wide variety of award-winning wines, locally produced cheeses and sausage, and a gift shop stocked with unique wine-related items. Visit the web site to learn about our events scheduled throughout the year.

Montserrat Vineyards
Montserrat Vineyards, established in 1998, is located 6 miles east of Warrensburg, MO and just 50 miles from Kansas City.
The winery is situated on the northern point of Bristle Ridge, giving the location a panoramic view from east to west. So vast is the view, in fact, it was commonly used as a "look-out point" during the Civil War. The town of Montserrat was laid out in 1870 and flourished boasting coalmines, brick and rail yards, churches, grocery store, and a rousting population of 255 people. Once alive with commerce, the town has only survived in the history books.
The once proven homestead of noble pioneers is only a shadow on the ground …but now the newly planted vineyards crown the land with high hopes for the region.

Katie and Clyde Gill have created the perfect marriage of vineyard and cellars at Peaceful Bend Vineyard. Just four miles northwest of the historic town of Steelville, Missouri, Peaceful Bend is perched above the clear, spring-fed waters of the Meramec River. Bardenheier Wine Cellars
The History of Bardenheier Wine Cellars
In 1865, John H Bardenheier came to the United States from Oberlahnstein, Germany were he became versed in the distribution end of the wine and liquor business. In 1873, he founded the John Bardenheier Wine and Liquor Company, later known as Bardenheier Wine Cellars. The original site of the company was 212 Market Street in St. Louis MO, behind the Old Cathedral building, approximately under the south leg of the Gateway Arch.
Bardenheier was legislated out of business on January 16, 1919 and forced to close its doors January 16, 1920 by the Volstead Act. On December 5th 1933, when repeal became effective, Joseph A Bardenheier Sr., son of the founder, reopened the doors for business. The business, after prohibition, was reopened on Market St. and later moved to 2nd Street in St. Louis. In 1955, they moved to 1019 Skinker Pkwy.
At their peak, Bardenheier's was one of the oldest and largest family owned and operated wineries in the United States. They had about 150 prime distributors in 39 states, with a total sales force of nearly 1300 representatives and brokers. The winery was sold in 1983 and was ultimately closed about 10 years later.
In 2004, Wayne and Kim Evans, daughter of John Bardenheier Jr., reacquired the family name and opened a small winery in Richwoods, Missouri. Initially, selling Sacramental Wines to a national church supplier and wine in barrels and tank trucks to Food and Pharmaceutical companies as well as other wineries in the Southwest, Midwest, and Northern States and in the Southeast. Bardenheier Wine Cellars introduced their own production at retail in 2006. Wayne Evans is the winemaker and has created a number of popular wines: Old Fashion Concord Grape, Strawberry, three delightful Table Wines in Red, White and Blush, a unique soft red table wine under the banner "Sunset Serenade", and a wonderfully fruity white wine called " Whispering Falls".
2008 will see the introduction of three new wines: Blackberry Cabernet Sauvignon, Strawberry Zinfandel and aged Cream Sherry with an enchanting Almond flavor. This wine will be called Almond Bavarian Cream. Bardenheier Wine Cellars is not yet open for tours, but the tasting room and Restaurant are open every day but Sunday. Come join us and enjoy yourself.

Vance Vineyards & Winery
Vance Vineyard and Winery is a small, but growing, family-owned business. With eight acres now under cultivation, the vineyards are a visual delight. The beautiful clusters of Norton, Catawba, Chardonnay and Chardonel grapes will make your mouth water. We will double the size of the vineyard in the spring of 2007 by adding Vignoles, Traminette, Chambourcin and Reisling. We will also plant a variety of table grapes: Vanessa is a mild, fruity crisp red dessert grape; Marquis is a high-flavor white grape from the Geneva B.P.; and Venus is a gorgeous (of course) large, blue-black flavorful table grape.
The old silo will become the clock tower, and be a centerpiece of the landscaping. All the tasting room construction is done in the German architectural style, as well as the entry towers and the plantings. Visitors to the Winery will easily imagine themselves in the heart of German wine country. How fitting to find this experience in historic Madison County, amid the groves of native trees at the foothills of the Ozarks.
Our beautiful tasting room houses a banquet/meeting room, a hearth room with piano bar, and a small gift shop. Several balconies and patio areas, one with an outdoor stone fireplace, will provide ample and comfortable seating for viewing the lake, the historic old silo and, of course, the vineyard. We have completed construction on a new state-of-the-art wine processing building with it's own testing laboratory.
Naturally, we offer a selection of cheese, sausage, crackers and fruit to enjoy with our wonderful wines. We feature Oberle sausage and smoked pork loin. Also remember, picnics are always welcome, so feel free to pack a basket of your own favorite foods. Outdoor picnic areas are available in secluded hide-aways or down by the lakeside.
Although we are a new winery, our winemaker has been producing fine wines for more than 30 years. His skill and experience assures that every bottle is worthy of the Vance Vineyards label and brings pride to Madison County's newest business venture. We have everything from dry to sweet, white to red; so you will be sure to find one that suits your taste perfectly.

Native Stone
Owned and operated by Cara and Larry Stauffer, Native Stone is a 300 acre estate located on the Lewis & Clark Trail, nine miles northwest of Jefferson City on Highway 179. Native Stone is named in honor of an award-winning play, written by Jim Steerman, based on the lives of the Stauffer family's ancestors.
Native Stone Vineyard
Over 6,000 vines of Catawba, Chambourcin, Chardonel, Frontenac, Norton, and Traminette grapes grow in Native Stone's Vineyards and are used to produce all of Native Stone's wines on site, in our state-of-the-art production facility.
Native Stone Winery
In celebration of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial, winemaker Larry Stauffer proudly announces the release of following new wines for 2003:
Native Stone Captains' Red – These Chambourcin grapes were harvested by hand from our Lakeside Vineyard, then blended to perfection with Norton and Catawba. Like the Co-Captains of the Expedition, the unique strengths and character of each blended together, make for a striking combination. This courageous blend is our tribute to Co-Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Captain's Red is as unique as its blend… distinctly American.
Native Stone Estate Bottled Chambourcin – These Chambourcin grapes were harvested by hand from our Lakeside Vineyard. Like the sails of the Corps' boats, this wine was influenced by light winds coming off the water. It's a moist gentle breeze carrying fresh fruity scents from the vineyard, with just enough strength to fill your sails…a fascinating journey of vivid color and intense flavor.
Native Stone Estate Bottled Chardonel – These Chardonel grapes were harvested by hand from our Haint Vineyard. Aged in Missouri Oak, this premium dry white wine is as elusive as the "Manitou" this vineyard is named for. Not what it seems… this apparition's brilliant reflection and airy demeanor mask its complex character and full ripe body.
Native Stone Estate Bottled Norton – These Norton grapes were harvested by hand from our Barrows Bluff Vineyard. Aged in Missouri Oak, this premium wine shares many of Lewis & Clark's attributes: bold character, robust energy, powerful strength and fearless endurance. You'll be delighted to discover spicy, chocolate, cherry overtones hidden in the folds of its velvet finish.
Native Stone Norton Port – These Norton grapes were harvested by hand from our Mohler Ridge Vineyard. Womanly soft, bravely sweet and as fearless as the only woman to join the Corps on their quest, this robust port won't back down from any challenge… our tribute to Sacagawea. Aged in Missouri Oak, and reinforced with distilled grapes, it offers a daring finish to any fine meal.

Bias Winery & Gruhlke's Microbrewery
Bias Vineyards & Winery is a family-owned winery started in 1980 by Jim and Norma Bias. The winery is located in Berger, Missouri just seven miles east of Hermann.
Located on a 64-acre farm high atop the scenic bluffs overlooking the Missouri River Valley, their wines are produced from their own vineyards just 600 feet from the winery itself. This allows them to harvest and promptly crush the grapes the moment they reach their peak of ripeness. The pressing, fermentation, aging and bottling, like most Missouri wineries, are all performed at the estate as well.
Starting with just five acres of Catawaba grapes, they have expanded with four other varieties of French hybrids in Chambourcin, DeChaunac, Seyval and Vidal. They also operate a microbrewery on the grounds named Gruhlke's Microbrewery.

Adam Puchta Winery
Farming and grape growing have played a major role in the Puchta family history. Many traditions and customs can be traced back to John Henry Puchta, father of Adam. John Henry, a resident of Oberkotzau, Bavaria, Germany, was both a wine grower and a butcher in his native land. His first wife passed away in 1832 leaving John Henry alone to raise two small children, John Adam and Friedrick. John Henry married Mary Schultheisz in 1833 and in the following years an additional eight children were born to the Puchtas - three in Germany and the rest in America. Wanting a fresh start, the Puchta family packed their belongings and sailed to America to put down roots near Hermann, Missouri.
John Adam was Born in Oberkotzau, Germany in 1831. In 1852, perhaps in the spirit of adventure, John Adam and his brother, Friedrick, drove a team of oxen to California. Adam remained in the California gold fields for approximately two years. After returning to Missouri, Adam married Clementine Riefenstahl, daughter of George Riefenstahl, one of the first 17 settlers of the town of Hermann.
The original 600 acre farm was owned by John Henry, Adam's father. Adam purchased a portion of that tract from his father's acreage and cleared the land for farming and grape growing. In 1855 he established the Adam Puchta & Son Wine Company.
Disaster struck in 1858 when Clementine died. The following year Adam married Clementine's sister, Bertha Riefenstahl, the first female child born in Hermann. Bertha and Adam had two children, Henry John and Clementine. Clementine died as a child attesting to the fact of the hardships and sorrows of the early years.
Adam continued to toil the land and wine-making, but found time to become a school director and road master. He, his wife, and family were members of the Evangelical Church.
After Adam's death in 1905, Henry John Puchta, son of Adam, continued the family operation of wine-making along with his son Everett until 1919 when Prohibition closed the winery doors. The family continued to farm the land passing it from generation to generation.
One of Everett's son, Randolph, born in 1928, and Randolph's son Timothy, born in 1956, re-opened Adam Puchta Winery in 1990. In 1994 Randolph and Eunice Puchta were recognized by the Missouri Century Farm Club as their family having contributed to local, state, national and international agriculture by owning and operating the same Missouri farm for 100 years or more.
Tucked in the valley near Frene Creek, Adam Puchta Winery is once again producing fine wines of world class stature with the ambiance of old family tradition. In the last 3 years our wines have had the distinction of earning 80 medals in state, national, and international competitions. In the year 2000, our 1997 Estate Bottled Norton received the Governor's Cup of Missouri, our state's highest honor. As you drive over the wooden plank bridge and round the bend, one notices the peaceful surroundings touched by the past and present. The original Puchta homestead houses our gift shop and tasting room.
Adam Puchta Winery remains the oldest and continuously owned farm family winery within the state and one of only a handful in the United States that date back to Pre-Prohibition days.

Stone Hill Winery - New Florence
The Midwest's Most Awarded Winery Winner of 253 medals in 2003
Our guests are always welcome to come to Hermann and experience the Old-World hospitality and charm of our underground cellars, magnificent views and exciting events. But we know life is sometimes just too hectic for all that. So we've made special provisions with just you busy folks in mind. Our New Florence facility is conveniently located on Interstate 70 at Exit 175, halfway between Columbia and St. Louis.
Visitors to New Florence will find the same award-winning wines and juices, the same quality wine-related gift items and the same gracious hospitality that the main winery in Hermann is known for. In addition, they'll find a mouth-watering selection of whole country-cured hams, ham steaks, sausages, cheeses and smoked turkey breasts.
As Stone Hill's champagne production facility, New Florence offers one thing that the winery's other two facilities do not–a firsthand glimpse at the traditional 18 th -century French method of champagne making. During an informative tour, visitors learn the secrets of Methode Champenoise .
A specially selected wine, called a "cuvee" is bottled with a precise amount of sugar and a special Champagne yeast. This results in a secondary fermentation within the sealed heavy Champagne bottle, creating the pressure and famous bubbles. The fermentation takes from three weeks to three months, but the bottles must remain undisturbed for about one year. This is important because the special flavor of bottle-fermented Champagne develops as the wine ages on the yeast; this aging process is called tirage. The bottles are then placed neck down in the riddling racks. Every day, each bottle is given a gentle shake and turn until all of the yeast has settled into the neck of the bottle. With the necks down, the bottles are then placed in a freezing unit until the necks are frozen, trapping the yeast sediment. The bottles are then turned up and quickly opened, allowing pressure to push out the ice and yeast. This process is called "disgorging" and when properly done, results in a sparkling clear Champagne. The bottles are quickly sealed with the final Champagne cork, which is wired in place. The Champagne is now ready to drink. Only Champagne made by this process is allowed to say "Fermented in this bottle" on the label. There are other bulk-type processes that are shortcuts in time, labor and quality, but all Stone Hill Champagne is made by this long, costly, original method.
Guests lucky enough to visit New Florence on "disgorging" day get a unique, insightful and historic display of Champagne making at its best.

A Captivating Legacy The highest quality, truly outstanding wines can be as hard to find as a vineyard and winery with a storied legacy.
In the early 1870s, a former slave traveled north up the Mississippi River from the Civil War-torn south and settled near Defiance, Missouri. Befriended by a family who lived on property next to that belonging to the family of Daniel Boone the freed man worked on their farm for many years. When he was married in the 1800s, the family deeded him 40 acres of their land including a hill overlooking the beautiful Femme Osage Valley. The man's name was Joseph Chandler who died in 1952 at the age of 103. Chandler Hill Vineyards operates on the same property he once owned. The tasting room and winery stands on the site of Joseph Chandler's modest cabin.
During excavation for the winery building many century-old artifacts were uncovered including a shotgun, rifle, stove remnants, buttons and china. These storied relics of Joseph Chandler will be on display at the winery. The stones from the original cabin foundation were also carefully removed and are being used as a feature at the winery.

Sugar Creek Winery & Vineyards
A dream fostered out of the love of wine and family wine-making tradition became a reality with the founding of Sugar Creek Winery & Vineyards by its proprietors Ken & Becky Miller in August of 1994.
Travel scenic highway 94, also called the Missouri Weinstrasse (wine road), and the first stop you find is Sugar Creek Winery. This area, one of the oldest settlements west of the Mississippi, including the winery grounds, was part of the original land grant given to the frontiersman Daniel Boone to settle the area.
Follow the highway and you'll be directed to turn up a hillside road. When reaching the top you will be rewarded by a wonderful view that takes in the Missouri River and its bluffs to the east and estate grown grapes to the west. Proprietors Ken & Becky, challenge wine enthusiasts, hikers and cyclists to "take to the hill" and sample their fine wines.
From the vineyard manager's point of view, "Great wines come from great grapes", and it has been Sugar Creek's goal to achieve this from the beginning. Old vineyards have been replaced with current popular varietals such as Vidal, Cynthiana, Chambourcin and an exciting new varietal Chardonel, a hybrid of Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc. The winery also contracts with other Missouri grape growers to meet production requirements.
Whether you enjoy the outside terrace, gazebo, or the cozy indoor parlor turned tasting room; Sugar Creek offers a wonderful way to spend a relaxing afternoon. The inviting atmosphere of Sugar Creek Winery & Vineyards welcomes everyone to come & enjoy their favorite wines, cheese, sausage, and snacks along with a small gift shop.

Mount Pleasant Winery - Augusta
George Munch, who came to the area with his brother, Frederick, from Germany, founded Mount Pleasant Winery in 1859. He established the winery in an area that reminded him of his homeland. From the beauty of the topography to the incredible potential for creating excellent wines, they chose Mount Pleasant in Augusta, Missouri. Built from the wood and abundant limestone of the area, the winery and cellars were completed in 1881.
When prohibition came in 1920 and the winery was forced to close, the vines were removed. In 1966 the winery was reopened and the vineyards were replanted with self- rooted vines and grafted European varieties. The original cellars are still used today to age estate bottled wines and international award winning Mount Pleasant Ports.
Mount Pleasant is located in America's first designated wine district in Augusta, Missouri.
Today, Mount Pleasant is the largest grower of grapes in the Augusta Appellation with over 60,000 vines. Approximately 4,800 of these are vinifera - Chardonnay and the Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Other varietals include Vidal Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Rayon d'Or, Vignoles, St. Vincent, Chambourcin, Couderc, Chardonnel, and Cynthiana.
Only a short distance from St. Louis, the winery offers a calm, friendly experience quite the opposite of the daily hustle and bustle of the city. Enjoy wine tasting and then settle down on the patio with its majestic view and enjoy a bottle of wine and maybe some bistro food from the Augusta Grocery.
During the winter months you can enjoy romantic candlelight dinners, or more lighthearted evenings at a murder mystery dinner theater.
Winner of numerous wine awards in state, national and international competitions, Mount Pleasant is open from 11:00 am - 5:30 pm every day. 800-467-WINE or 636-482-WINE toll-free from the St. Louis area, or visit www.mountpleasant.com for a calendar of events and on-line ordering.
