Description
Here's a great drive through the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, in the extreme eastern edge of San Diego County. It's a fairly easy drive but will give that four-wheel- or all-wheel-drive system some good exercise.
Travel through Canyon Sin Nombre, a twisting drive through nine million years of evolution and the Elsinore Fault, then back up Vallecito Creek, then rejoin county highway S-2 near the settlement of Canebrake. It's just 12 miles through the wilderness, but driving on sand and stopping to take in the view took me a couple of hours.
NOTE: The GPS route gives you only target points; follow the trails at all times. Check with the Park Ranger before attempting off-road travel. 4x4 vehicle required for off-road travel. Canyon can be narrow; wide vehicles may not fit.
