This is an invaluable tool to anyone who likes travelling off the beaten path. It takes you to not only where you want to go but to places that you didn't even know existed. Well done to the designer its fantastic
Anonymous(8 months ago)
This is fantastic! I have been to malin head on 2 occasions but having this program would have been most valuable in seeing areas I never thought of seeing.
Anonymous(8 months ago)
On a past vacation trip, I could have used this program many times over. We later discovered many interesting places we missed. It would be great to see an addition to this program that included the Dunfanaghy and Horn Head area.

Having travelled the length and breadth of ireland and having got lost, this is a breath of fresh air.
It's totally easy to navigate, full of useful information and must be a potential best seller for the Inishowen peninsula.

Bocan stone circle ANCIENT
You might be best to park your car by the houses before the to-be-avoided-by-car dirt track leading to the Temple of Deen and take in this stone circle with your sat nav device to hand. You'll need to access the site via the lane across from the main road and then turn left climbing over the gate and through a field on a hill. This site, with over 30 stones, was built somewhere between 1500-3000 BC and is believed to have been a sun temple. Cooley cross ANCIENT
The cross stands on what is believed to be the entrance to the monastery established by St Finian and dates back to the 11th century. It was the indignation that St. Finian felt at St. Colmcille copying a text of his without permission that lead to the establishment of the earliest example of copyright infringement and the ruling by King Diarmaid that "as to every every cow, its calf , so to every book, its copy". The cross contains a pierced ring and a hole, suggesting it may originally have been a more ancient hole stone carved to help pagans make the transition to Christianity. The footprint on the base stone is supposed to be that of St. Patrick himself. Beside it is a building known as the Skull House. It was originally an oratory but later became a mortuary. Glenevin waterfall SCENIC VIEW/LANDMARK
The spectacular Glenevin waterfall is located between Straid and Crossconnel, 2km from the village of Clonmany. The roadside entrance to the waterfall and picnic area is beside the Glen House, but you'll need to park further down the hill towards Clonmany. This waterfall cascades fresh mountain water descending over black rock from an astounding height of 30 feet. The expanse at the top measures 15 yards which curls gracefully to 1.5 yards at the bottom. The basin below called Pohl€"an-eas, derives its meaning from the foam which lies on the surface of the pool. Poll-an-Eas translates into English as the "ferment pool". It's a leisurely 20 minute walk up a gentle gradient to get to the waterfall, but the kids will love it - the meandering babbling stream and wild hawthorn bushes is a veritable fairyland for fun and games. Grianan of Aileach, the stonehouse of the sun. According to legend, it was built by Daghda, an ancient King of the Tuatha de Danann. A hillfort that once was at the historical centre where 18 high kings ruled over Ireland. During that time, the acts of its kings, warriors, tribes saints and sages dominate many of the pages of Ireland's history but with scarcely any acknowledgement of the particular place from whence they sprang. Inistrahull island BIRD
This unique island, the oldest rock in Ireland at some 1.8 BILLION years, is a declared nature reserve. It holds large numbers of breeding birds, but is also known as an area that attracts rare migrants. In its height the herring gull population was up to 3,000 pairs in the 1970's. This number is now much reduced, due to a number of factors such as botulism, due to the modern nature of this species feeding on landfill sites. Malin Head trail - BIRD
In times past, this area was an important seabird colony. In the 1970's hundreds of herring gull, common gull, great black backed gull the occasional lesser black backed Gull, eider ducks, red breasted mergansers and on one occasion the manx shearwater nested in this inhospitable place. Unfortunately, in 1994 a total desertion of the colony took place. It is though that a predator such as an American mink /fox managed to make it on to the island that is Dunalderagh, Ireland's most northerly point. However, a number of shag and fulmar as well as rock pipit, wheatear, ring plovers and oystercatchers do nest. Fortunately in 2004, the first common gulls returned to nest, so it is hoped this colony will return to its former glory. Most of Ballyhillin's sea gulls now nest near the sea stack of Scheildren down by Malin Head. In Spring and Autumn, good numbers of migrating whimbrel can be found here. Rare birds such as the shore lark have appeared here on at least one occasion. Occasionally Little Auks can be seen here during harsh winter weather. A pleasant walk through beech, maple and lime trees as the Crana river meanders its final stretch to the Swilly. If you want to find out more about Inishowen, the only man to read is Harry Percival Swan. His books are still available in the libraries. In a flourish, native Buncrana man Swan wrote that "the air in Buncrana is balmy and invigorating: medical experts declare that mountain air and sea air are here found in ideal proportions and there is a particularily mild winter climate, stated by an eminent authority to match that of Rome". La dolce vita includes good fishing on the river Crana, golfing at the 18 hole North West Golf Course and nearby Lisfannon's blue flag beach. Buncrana Castle HISTORY
In 1718, Buncrana Castle was built by George Vaughan, it was the earliest of the big houses in Inis Eoghain. The word 'castle' was used in this period for any large, non-ecclesiastical, stone building. Using stone from the old surrounding 'bawn' wall of O'Doherty's Keep for its construction. It was erected on the original site of Buncrana, which had grown up in the shadow of the keep, Vaughan moved the town to its present location, where he laid out the main street and built Castle Bridge (a six-arched stone single lane bridge) in 1718.
Wolfe Tone was held there when captured after the British/French naval battle off Donegal, before being taken to Derry then on to Dublin. The castle is still a private house today. In the forecourt there is a gravestone in honor of Sir Cahir O'Doherty, and a plaque to Wolfe Tone. Buncrana old pier HISTORY
Revolutionary icon Theobold Wolfe Tone landed here on the 3rd November 1798 on the French warship La Hoche and was soon captured. Over a hundred years later, the British royal family landed at the same spot.
Several attacks by rebels occurred off the Irish coast in the 1798 rebellion. One such boat, The Hoche, encountered an English squadron at Buncrana on Lough Swilly on 12 October 1798. Tone, who was on board, refused General Bompard's offer of escape in a frigate before the action, and was taken prisoner when Hoche surrendered.
When the prisoners were landed a fortnight later, Sir George Hill recognized Tone in the French adjutant-general's uniform. At his trial by court-martial in Dublin on 8 November 1798 Tone made a speech avowing his determined hostility to England and his intention "by frank and open war to procure the separation of the countries". On a large rock, named the Friar's Rock in the Isle of Doagh, stands the forlorn ruins of Carrackabraghey Castle. The translation of the Irish name into English is Castlebrack. The castle has changed hands many times and was once occupied by Mc Faul the 11th descendant of Prince Eoghain, son of Niall and the nine hostages. It was last inhabited in 1665. (less) On a large rock, named the Friar's Rock in the Isle of Doagh, stands the forlorn ruin...(more)

In 1454, rival claimants for lordship of Tyrconnell between Donnell O'Donnell and Ruraidh O'Donnell. As a dying request, Donnell asked that he be unfettered and his wish was granted. However, far from surrendering to the flames, he made his way through the smoke to battlements on top from which he dislodged a large stone. He took careful aim at Ruraidh who was below. The rock stroke Ruraidh, fracturing his skull and he died immediately. St. Eigne's HOLY WELL
At the top of Mamore, you should stop off to view St. Eigne's Holy Well, renowned for its healing qualities and situated beside shrines to the Virgin Mother and St. Padre Pio.
There's a small tin jug by the well and you are encouraged to fill a bottle of holy water to bring home and cure ailments from the eyes to the limbs. By the grottos, you will notice relics of deceased, often young people, left by their families. Despite the inhospitality of the terrain, you'll notice how all of the mementos are remarkably well preserved. They are traditionally cleared on the 15th of August , the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the day on which Christ's mother was brought up to Heaven 40 days after her earthly death. St Padre Pio is a saint particularly close to the Irish. Cooley cross LEGEND
Cooley cross stands on what is believed to be the entrance to the monastery established by St Finian and dates back to the 11th century. It was the indignation that St. Finian felt at St. Colmcille copying a text of his without permission that lead to the establishment of the earliest example of copyright infringement and the ruling by King Diarmaid that to "as to every every cow, its calf, so to every book, its copy". Colmcille was found guilty and as punishment was banished from Ireland, settling off the coast of western Scotland on Iona. Part of his punishment was never to set foot on the soil of Ireland again, and technically he didn't as he frequently returned to its shores with shoes that contained soil from his Scottish isle! Eoghain's grave LEGEND
In AD395, Prince Eoghan (Owen), son of King Niall of the Nine Hostages, Ard Righ of Ireland, came to Grianan of Aileach and gave his name to Inis Eoghain (i.e., Island of Owen). According to the Annals of the Four Masters, Eoghan himself was buried here in AD465 "Eoghan, son of Niall dies of tears, goodly his nature for the death of hardy feats and his grave is at Uisge-Chaoin." Eoghan lived and died a prince, but his grandson Muircheartach Mor MacEarca became King of Aileach and first Christian High King of al Ireland. Amelia Earhart landing spot OFF BEAT
On the morning of May 20, 1932 the flight pioneer set off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland with the intention of flying to Paris in her single engine Lockheed Vega 5b to emulate Charles Lindbergh's solo flight. After a flight lasting 14 hours, 56 minutes during which she contended with strong northerly winds, icy conditions and mechanical problems, Earhart landed in a pasture at Culmore on the banks of Lough Foyle. In a masterly stroke of understated smalltalk, a farm hand who'd witnessed the landing asked, "Have you flown far?" Amelia replied, "From America". The site now is the home of a small museum, the Amelia Earhart Centre, but I'm hearing its shut (and it looked it when I checked yesterday) so read up on this fascinating woman before making the pilgrimage here. From Gilly's Shipwrecks of the Royal Navy, an observer wrote: "months had passed away after the wreck and it was supposed that every living thing had perished with the Saldanha when in the following August, a bird was observed in a tree near a gentleman's house in Burt. A servant mistook it for a hawk and shot it. When taken up the bird proved to be a beautiful queen parrot, having round its neck a gold ring inscribed "Captain Packenham. HMS Saldanha".
